  1. MiniDV tape is a digital tape format used by some camcorders. They record to DV (Digital Video) and HDV (HighDefinition Digital Video) formats that are the least compressed methods of the currently available storage media. Becaue the video is not compressed so much, miniDV tape provides the best available video quality.

Next best are hard drive based and some of the higher-end flash memory camcorders. Their compression is a lot - but it is not *that* bad (though I would not waste my hard-earned money on them).

Then comes still cameras that happen to take videos.

The WORST available video quality comes from DVD based camcorders. They were a good idea - but poorly implemented by the manufacturers. I believe the manufacturers should recall them all and refund the money to the people who bought them - and the DVD based camcorders should all be recycled into something more useful...  like a paperweight.

  2. negative!

mini dv is tape where dvd is an optical disc.

    advantages of mini dv include:

    - cheaper archiving

    - better resolution

    - better availability.

    tid-bit for today....

did you know that DVD stands for digital VERSATILE disc (and not digital video disc like most people think!)?

  3. No mini dv is recorded on a mini dv tape (like cassette tapes) while mini dvd's are recorded on a DVD cd that looks about like a regular DVD but half of the size.

They are both fully digital but one is burnt to tape and the other is burnt to a DVD.

  4. i think so
