Are most Scottish accents easy to understand?

I'm going to Scotland in July for a month and I want to know if the accents are hard to understand and what do some their popular 'slang' words mean so I know what's going on? I've heard Scottish accents in movies but people tell me that the accents are toned down...is that true?

i have a friend from scotland. sometimes it can be really tough, but mostly its just fun to listen to. have a ton of fun, you'll love it. ha they say things like... uhh lmao theres tons. cant think of any right now.. but their word for tired is knackered.
