  1. I went from National Guard to active duty, and it was a bit difficult.

It depends if your unit is about to deploy, if you're short on manpower, and if your commanding officer will sign the paperwork.

If your answer is "yes" to the first two questions, and "no" for the third, you may not be able to switch.

In addition, there as some MOS that are Reserve only.  I believe that all of the HUMINT units are Reserves, for example.

  2. It all depends on your current unit's staffing levels and if they can afford to "lose" you by moving into an Active duty unit.  Another factor is what MOS do you have?  Does the Active component have a need for your job.  That plays a big factor in the decision too.  Last, but not least, is what kind of a soldier/sailor/Marine/airmen are you?  Do you have high evaluation marks?  Awards? etc.

They might not say that one out loud, but it is definatly a factor.

Good luck and I hope this helps!
