Question:

Are multi-stage thermostats compatible with single stage systems?

My honeywell T8601 (single stage, hard-wired) broke and I am trying to replace it with an equal thermostat. I am having a hard time finding this exact model for sale anymore but have come across some similar models on clearance for about $60

T8600 (single stage, power stealing)

T8624 (multi-stage, hard-wired)

I don't even know how to check or confirm that a power-stealing unit will work with my system...anyone have an idea?

Will a multi-stage thermostat still control a single-stage heater/AC properly?

There are no returns on clearance purchases so I cannot buy and try.

  1. Yeah a multi stage will work with a single stage application but stay away from power stealing thermostats that's why their on clearance they do cause problems as zone valves get older the power stealer will take enough VA away that they won't open and other issues varying from system to system
