Are mutual funds traded normally on an exchange?

Because I cant seem to do it on my simulator, it rejects all symbols

  1. Mutual funds do not trade on an Exchange, it's illegal.

No, mutual funds are not traded on exchanges.  They are bought or sold directly or indirectly through the company that manages them, or broker/agent or that handles that for you.  They are priced daily after the market close, and that is the price you pay for shares bought, or receive for shares sold, that transact that day.  If you want to buy/sell them, you have to do that before the cutoff time, before markets close, and you will not know what the price will be until after it happens that evening.

    There are ETF's (exchange traded funds) that trade like stocks that more or less follow the holdings of specific mutual funds, or may give you an idea during the day how similar mutual funds might perform that day.  But they do not necessarily follow in lock step with the mutual funds.
