Question:

Are my PVC dryer balls safe to use?

I've recently bought some dryer balls to soften fabrics naturally without the use of chemicals. On the package of the product, it claims to be "Healthier... No Chemicals!". However, they did not disclose what the balls are made out of. I bought them anyways because my logic at the moment was, "They obviously care about the environment for selling a product like this, so they can't possibly make them out of PVC since that would be quite ironic" When I got home, I went onto their website, and found out that these balls are made out of PVC (Dam*n those advertisers...) I know PVC plastics are toxic to make/incinerate and will leech toxins into the landfills, but how dangerous are they to use? What will happen if you heat PVC plastic in a dryer? Should I use them and risk building up more toxins in my body, or throw it out so its toxins will degrade into the environment? I have no idea what to do with them right now, and I can't return them since I've already opened the package.

  1. Yes, You CAN return them if you wish.  Simply explain to them your position in the matter, and you should have no problem.

    good luck

  2. well u can still return the package as long as u have the receipt.  I use those dryer balls as well.  i never gave much thought to what they are made of but i think it is usable if u put it a low or no temperature drying mode.

if u still kinda sketchy about using it i heard golf balls works equally as well.

  3. should return it. they will let you if you have bought it a short amount of time ago

  4. I use those dryer balls - but there is pvc products all around.  If I am not mistaken, is not the white plastic pipe used in home construction for plumbing and often in underground sprinklers, known as pvc pipe.  So I assume that is the same polyvinyl chloride we are talking about here!  It is supposed to be chemically non-reactive thus should be safe to use.  The biggest problems with PVC, as I understand it, are the toxins produced when it is manufactured.

You should be able to return them if you are boycotting products made with PVC but such products are all around!
