Are my kittens ready to eat real food now?

my kittens are just around a month old.the mother seems to still feed them but not very much now she only stays in there with the kittens for a few minutes then comes out and all the kittens start crying because they are still hungry. do you think the mom cat is starting to stop feeding them more because they are old enough to move on to normal kitten food?

At three weeks you should start seeing them try to eat with mom cat. The best thing to do is to feed Mom a high quality canned diet and that will entice the little ones and they will start eating with her.

Don't mix water into dry food. The water takes up to much space and the kittens don't get enough nutrition when you do that. Feed a high quality canned only diet to the mom, who will then teach the kittens to eat. :o)

A kitten usually depends on their mother for 6-8 weeks.

it sounds as though the mother cat maybe trying to wean the kittens, it wont hurt to place a small bowl of kitten chow down so they can get to it. and also set one aside for momma too..she needs the extra nutrition.good luck

Hey, The kittens could be ready for "normal" kitten food, the only way you would know if they were ready is to try feeding them it, if they do not eat it you could try watering it down so it is soft for them to chew. Also try to keep the mommy cat feeding them for as long as you can even if  they just get a little of her milk they will get more of the nutrients they need, to be healthy.

If the momma starts to introduce the kits to her food then they will be ready to move on. Usually the kits follow mom over to her dish and give it a try when they are ready.

I usually start foster kittens on canned Iams chicken about three weeks..hehe when they start chewing the nipples off the bottles.
