Question:

Are my pickles safe?

I canned for the first time yesterday, and I pulled out 7 pints of pickles. I let everything settle over night. I checked the lids in the morning and everything appeared to be good until I got to the last jar. It "popped" once. It appears to be sealed and doesn't make a popping noise now. Is it safe to store for later use? (We are kind of tired of pickles and cucumbers at this point, so I don't feel like eating them right away.)

  1. Lids actuall "pop" when they seal sometimes also.

Look at the lid and the center should slightly dipped in. If you cannot tell by looking, put a 1/4 teaspoon of water on top. if it sits in the middle it is sealed.

It does not need to be thrown. Refrgerate it as if it was a new jar you just opened.

    Enjoy them cukes.

  2. You want the lids to pop! That means the seals took and the center went inward. It would be those that didn't pop that I would worry about. I always set my jars on a towel on a counter and count the pops. If a jar did not pop, then re-do it with a new seal.

  3. All jars should make a popping sound.  It means it's sealed properly.  There should be a slight indentation in the top of the lid.

  4. No, that jar that popped isn't safe.  But, congrats on getting 6 good jars out of your first batch of pickles!

  5. No.If the lid popped it is not sealed properly. You can get botulism from that and you dont want that.
