I want to get some tetras and my favorite 3 types (in order) 1 glo-lite tetras 2 red eyed tetras 3 neon tetras. I have a 12 gallon and would like to have a nice school of 6-9 of one type. Which of these three tetras is the most tolerant. I am fairly new (about a year and a half) to

fish keeping so I would like some fish that can survive my learing mistakes. so list in order 1-3 which fish is the easiest to which fish is the worst.

  1. Out of those 3, neons, but serapiea tetras are the best. They are nippy towards each other unless you have a big groups. You could get a group os 10.

  2. Great Tetra you like there.  I currently have all three species in schools.

From experience...the most hardy species of the 3 is the Red eyes.  Second is the Neon's and third is the Glow Light Tetra.

As far are the schooling...in a 12 Gallon you could probably put 1 school of Neon's and 1 school of another type of Tetra you mentioned.

I would do the Glow Lights.  In my experience, they are similar in activity and behavior.

You have a wide variety you could go with...something else to think about...Black Light Tetra.  They are small like the Neon's and will school with them.

The Serpae , Black Skirt, and "larger" Tetra are nippers.  And in a 12 Gallon Tank, would only stick to one school of one type.

    Recap

    6 Neon Tetra

    5 Glow Light Tetra

Normally, people will tell ya too many fish, however, the Neon's are can fit in under the wire with less issues of space.

Average to Great filtration and you are set.

The Red Eye Tetra are cool also, but found them to be a little different.  My Neon's and Glow Light's school together somewhat, a lot more than my Red Eyes and either of the other 2 types of Tetras.

If you go with the Red Eyes, my suggestion is to put a school of Rummy Nose with them.

    Suggestion

    5 Red Eye

    5 Rummy Nose

I like the Neon/Glow Light combo better, but with a different school of Tetra (rummy nose) the Red Eyes are way cool also.

    Best of Luck!

  3. Neons are never tolerant.. They die so easily..

Needs a lot of care n research on each type before u make a purchase.

  4. red eyed tetras seem to be the hardiest of the bunch you named.  Black Skirts, Columbian, and Serpaes are also very hardy

  5. All of your choices are pretty equal .All are fairly easy to keep and require the same care . So just pick some good specimens .No torn fins and good body shape, and really fast swimmers .If any of these are easy to catch , they are sick . So good luck !

  6. i say any three will be fine aslong as you remember to aclimate them properly, dont just get home and throw them in, and dont just let them sit in the bag for 10 minutes then open and let go after the ten minutes are up start by opening the bag and emptying out the water till u reach just enough to let your fish swim in the bag without struggling. then start to SLOWLY let water from your tank fill the bag, this allows them to get use to the type of water, which has minor differences in texture and trace elements. this is what usually keeps you from losing a lot at once. also make sure u do small adds and not buy all at once, this will help with starter tank syndrom

  7. Tetras are all really easy fish to care for. You could mix any of them together in your tank if you wanted.
