A good old Sony or Toshiba CRT would last 20 years. The new LCD and Plasma technology is nice but if we only get 6 to eight years out of them then I think they're a rip-off.Not to mention they are manufactured in China or Mexico where cheap labor is abundant but that's another topic.

  1. Well, i had a sony triton 27 inch, very decent tv since 1988 and it still work. used it HEAVILY for 19 years. just got a brand new 46 inch Samsung 1080p full hd for $3000. fully worth it, it had a problem within 2 days, but faulty delivery fault. they gave me  FREE UPGRADE to a better television worth $700 more and replaced it within two weeks.

  2. LCD's are... Plasmas lose their brightness...

  3. Go buy a black and white TV from the 50's.  That should last you a lifetime.

  4. I would say LCD's are for sure but maybe not plasmas.  Plasma bulbs go out alot faster than lcd or CRT ones.

  5. CRTs are also manufactured in China, Mexico, and other places where labor is cheap.  Was there a point to that statement?

If you don't like the price of LCD/plasma vs. CRT to the lifespan, don't buy one.  The former are much newer technologies, so the price will continue to drop.  No one is *forcing* you to buy a flat-screen TV, are they?  Heck, they're selling converter boxes if you want to watch digital broadcasts on a 20-year-old 480i CRT.  Honestly, non-HD programming tends to look worse, if anything, on at least my 19" LCD than it ever did on a 25" CRT.  But it's still well worth it in terms of floor space in my tiny living room. . . .

  6. Traditional CRT televisions are more reliable in the sense that they last for extremely long amounts of time unlike LCD and Plasmas. Most failure in LCDs and Plasmas are mainly from misplacement in the sense of inadequate space for cooling which is not need as much in LCDs.

Although they do not last as long as CRTs they are much higher quality and if maintained properly will last about 50,000 hours for Plasma and 70,000 hours for LCD. So they will still last you a good 10+ years.

  7. lcd is the way to go. plasma uses way to much energy plus you have to be careful cuz the screens are easily damaged.
