I mean traditional tungesten bulb torches. Do they provide satisfactory battery life in a torch? What is their life like compared to standard batteries?

  1. tourch -- OH FLASHLIGHT!

no, they are not very good for a flashlight. The reason is that they are 1.2V and not 1.5V (alkaline) so you are already at a disadvantage and the lamp requires the higher voltage for maximum illumination

  2. I generally don't use rechargeable betteries in  a torch but you can.  If you use a torch very frequently it will save you money on batteries.  But if it just sits most of the time the battery can self-discharge and not have much power when you need it.  For torches and remote controls I use regular alkalline batteries.
