Are old bills worth any money?

i have a ten cent bill from the year 1849 & i was wondering if it was worth anything. i tried looking up on the internet & i can only find info on coins.

  1. Yes, it's got to be worth a few bucks. Sometimes big bucks. I'm no expert but don't part with it at any price until you're sure.

    Try adding the words "paper money" & "notes" to your search. You might find a couple dealers in notes and send them a scan of it. If you get a lot of interest it's probably worth more than you're getting offered. Also, you can put it on ebay and probably end up getting fair market value if you make your add good.

    I didn't readily find any information about 1849 notes, but there are numerous 1870s notes - known as "fractional currency" - that bear the picture of William M. Meredith, Secretary of the Treasury from 1849-50.

  4. You'll have to find an expert and let them examine it. In 1849 banks were allowed to print their own money so there were literally as many different types of money as there were banks.
