Are .org domains marketable?

i had a .net name for a few days and the domain got transferred because i wasn't paying attention and had my domain unlocked. Now i have a .org name and was wondering if .org is treated the same by search engines like google and yahoo. I know .org is less desirable than .com and .net but why is this?

  1. Well they should be just fine. Search engines index all domains, the number of links to you, the number of visits, the amount of quality content, and the keywords (being relevant) are what get indexes not the domain extension.

Originally .org was meant for non profit organizations to use.

.Net was meant for networking  like ISPs IPPs, networking companies

.Com was meant for Commercial operations, like sales and retail

However, since all of that was more or less voluntary compliance, it has become less relevant (except to us old timer internet purists who hate .org on the end of a business domain! -- ok off my soapbox now)

Even the newer domain extensions are marketable  like .aero .biz .info They are all global and work just fine. So if you have a business consider .biz etc.

What you put on your website is what makes the difference to search engines - good content, good visit ratings, good links all relevant to the keywords gets good placement.
