When you are doing Jumps, Spins, and Lunges are over-the-boot tights good to wear or will they rip really fast and easily?

  1. Yes and no.  I think they give a skater's legs a nice clean line and a longer appearance, which is great for tests/competitions, but any little wipe out, they end up with holes in them.  Step on your boot in a scratch spin and there are holes in the toes.  Fall on a jump and slide a little, there's holes in the sides from the hooks on your skates.  Do a lunge and the inside of your foot gets little holes.  As mentioned before, get a good pair for anything formal and save the "holy" ones for practice.  :)

  2. I only wore them for competition, and then when they got holey I wore the old ones for practice... but they cost $$.

  3. Mine don't rip unless I slash the top with my blade.  Falling and sliding doesn't do it.  I have used Mondor and Danskin brand, and the Danskin ones I never even bothered to put the hooks in (they just cling to the boot and don't move much).

In my experience, the Danskin ones have held up a little better.  They definitely help keep my skates looking "clean," although it is still possible to add scratches if you hit it with the blade hard enough.

To keep my holes as small as possible, I use Fray Check on them before I wash.  I would imagine clear nail polish would work too, but Fray Check is really made for this use (less risk of it "chipping' off).

  4. I've bought MANY pairs of over the boot tights for my kids and every single one of them has rips on the boot part from their jumps and spins  Like a dummy I let them wear theses tight at practiced.

These tights are worth the money for competition because they give the appearance that you have long legs and you look polished. They are not good for every day use if you don't like rips and holes. My daughters would some times put holes in them on the first day they wore them. (cry)

  5. I would only use them for competition. But i also have a ripped up pair for practice.

  6. Due to the cost, I purchase 2 pair for my daughter for competition and when they get holes, we make them practice tights.  The thick Mondors are better because they are thick (and warm) they don't tear as easily and you can run them through the sewing machine and close up any holes.

The bonus to using over-the-boot tights during practice is that they protect the skates.  My daughter's skates always look like new when she outgrows them because she always wears over-the-boot tights so they sell for a higher price and quicker too!!

  7. Oh yeah they are! They keep your boots a little less scratch, but you can still get a little scratched, they also make it so you laces do not get stuck on your boot hooks!

  8. well, it depends on if you get a nice pair or a cheap pair, if you get a nice pair, they wont rip so easily, they are definitely worth the money, and i think they make lunges easier, they cost about $20 though, so youll have to be careful that you dont hit them with your toepick as you practice, if you tend to kick your boot, or nick it with your toepick, then i would only wear them for competions and programs, but i would get them,  youll love them, but make sure you wash them, cuz theyll turn black on the feet, wash them in the sink with some soap and a little perfume, they are a lot warmer than regular tights, so either wear thin thin socks, or tights

    Good Luck!
