  1. No, Type 1's are barely ever overweight, it's a genetic and possibly virally triggered auto-immune disease.  And only about 50% of Type 2's, who are constantly blamed for "causing" their disease with obesity, are even overweight at the time of diagnosis.  Genes are to blame for most cases.  As my doc says, I picked the wrong parents!

  2. Sorry, but no overweight people are not the only people at risk for diabetes.

In case you did not already know, there are two forms of diabetes mellitus (DM) known as DM type I and DM type II.

DM type I is an autoimmune disease that usually has an earlier onset (usually grade school aged).  DM type I quite often occurs in tall thin people.

DM type II the more common form of DM does occur more frequently in obese/overweight people especially those with central obesity (big bellies).  However, other risk factors include family history, poor diet, certain ethnicities (e.g. Hispanic and Native Americans), and other disease conditions.

With all this said it sounds like you are taking a good first step in preventing the disease in your body by staying fit and in shape.  If you are really concerned that you may have DM because of symptoms (increase thirst, urination, or hunger) you could see your doctor and have them check your blood sugar (very simple test).

    Best of luck!
