Just a random though...but I was wondering if owls are birds, or their own category of animal.

  1. Owls are birds.  You can tell by the feathers, wings, and beak ;).

More specifically, they're birds of prey.

  2. yes, they are commonly known as "birds of prey"

  3. yes they are big birds i mean big bird but they only come out at night just like bats

  4. Owls are birds. They are  not considered  true "avian raptors" or "birds of prey" since they mostly come out at night (although there are a few species of owls that are only diurnal), and also have some much different physical features than other birds of prey. They belong to the order of birds- Strigiformes.

Some of the physical characteristics are:

    Flatter Face

    Rounder Head

    Bigger Eyes

Heads Could Turn Around 360 Degrees

    Some Live in Small Colonies

These birds are found on all parts of Earth except Antarctica ( don't mistaken Antartica for the Arctic, because snowy owls live in the Arctic), some parts of Greenland, and some remote islands.

As I mentioned before some owls are activer during the day. One kind is  called the Burrowing Owl.

    Here's  a picture of it-http://www.geocities.com/birdsofhispanio...

There are also owls active during the twilight and dusk. One of the species is called the Pygmy Owl.

    Here's a picture of it- http://whyfiles.org/shorties/180chickade...

You could see the differences in the head of the North American Bald Eagle (avian raptor) and a Great Horned Owl (Strigiforme).

    Great Horned Owl- http://www.hickerphoto.com/data/media/40...

    Both are very beautiful birds.

JUST REMEMBER THAT OWLS AND AVIAN RAPTORS ARE IN TWO SEPARATE BIRD GROUPS. STRIGIFORMES(OWLS) ARE QUITE A BIT DIFFERENT FROM FALCONIFORMES (TRUE AVIAN RAPTORS). WIKIPEDIA IS A BIT OFF. OWLS AREN"T REALLY CONSIDERED AVIAN RAPTORS. I GOT INFO FROM RESCENT BOOKS I READ FROM.

  5.   Yeah, they are birds.
