Are parakeets easy to keep?

Do they require a lot of maintenance. How old should a parakeets age be when I buy it?

Do their cages really need to be around people?

  1. They are the easiest of all the parrots to keep. I think they are pretty easy. They are not very loud, unless you have more than one and they do not require as much interaction as the larger species.

The bird should be at least 6 weeks old when you buy him.  Parakeets take 5 weeks to wean, and the breeder will usually keep the baby at his/her house for an extra week to make sure the baby is maintaining the proper weight and eating on its own before he can go home. I suggest if you want a pet budgie that you find a local breeder who hand-raises them.  Pet store "bin-o-budgies" are NOT tame or pet quality and are usually raised in unhealthy & horrible conditions.

Luckily, Budgie cages are usually so small that they can be easily moved around, so placement isn't a huge issue with them.  They do prefer to be "involved" with your family/household, but not right in the middle of everything.  Parrots need at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep everynight, so if you put them in a room where people stay up late watching TV or are loud, that could cause helath problems.

I think if you have a room where people spend some time, but isn't a high traffic area, like a hallway, they love that.

BUT:  Parakeets CAN be very messy.  They eat mainly seeds, so they throw little tiny seed hulls EVERYWHERE! It's ridiculous. And completely annoying.

  2. Really you need to take him out every day for at least for two to one hour, and the other guy is right in the mourning they are real loud and occancnaly in the afternoon.

  3. unless u like a lot of noise early in the morning, dont getem, my sister had 2, but sounded more like 10

  4. I've had parakeets or budgies for the past 15 years and I just love them.  They are low-maintenance pets and very easy to keep. They don't need any shots so you don't have to take them to the vet all the time.  They're the least expensive pets I find to maintain.  They don't smell either.  Just get a good size cage (cage doesn't have to be around people but you don't want to ignore the birds so place where you will be able to see them sometimes), birdseed, cuttlebone or mineral block, millet (the birds love this treat) and provide them with water and toys.  Male birds love to look at themselves in the mirror.  Give them some play time out of the cage too.  Just make sure their wings are trimmed.   Best to get a bird that's still a youngster, although some older birds make good pets.  I prefer males to females because females usually have egg-laying issues which can be fatal.  Sometimes you can train a male to talk, too.  But not all males will talk.  They have different personalities, too.  Some are sweet, some shy, some scared, some are very active.  They are alot like people in that way.  Only thing you'll have to do is vacuum occasionally to get feathers or seeds off the floor.  Give them love and attention and they will thrive.

  5. Yes I had 3 parakeets before and they are one of the best starter birds especially for kids. They are the less expensive and taking care of them is less expensive. However they still need to be taken out once in awhile and you need to clean their cage and feed them.

  6. if your a quit family your birds will be quit to

if you mean by easy like having to change there water every day and there food and cleaning the bottom of there cage every day than ya its easy

but i got same ones you get use to it, it gets fun

and leave them in there cages for about 1 month than you let tham out so they can fly aroud but make sure there's no window's and miros aroud because they can get hurt
