  1. A parakeet will need to get to know its mate, but eventually they will mate and have baby parakeets. Yay!

  2. well they liked to be courted first- and if you don't romance them enough they bite you with their tiny beaks-  I find parakeets are worth the trouble!

  3. In the wild parakeets breed in colonies in groves of Eucalyptus trees. There will be hundreds and hundreds of pairs. They rely on that chatter to help them into breeding condition. This means that usually one or two pair won't breed. It unusually takes several pairs of birds to get to the level of chatter to work.

Purchase a book on keets. THF has some good ones. I find great books on Ebay. I bought one on parrot training that was only 4.49 including shipping. There is so much that I couldn't begin to even get to the tip of the iceberg. A book is a must have. Actually get the book first and read it a couple times. It is easier to set the book on a shelf than it is to re-home 15-20 keets and cages.

I breed mine in cages that are made out of 1/2" x 1" wire. They are 16" x 12" x 12". The nest boxes are hung on the outside of the cage. They need to be about 6"x 9" x 10" tall. I have tried to breed them using wood shavings for nesting material. I have used nest blocks with no other material. The nest block make the best nest for a small keet to keep up to ten eggs under her. I found a drill bit to make the concave nest blocks. I think they took them off of the market. I had been looking for one for a long time. I bought one from a old timer who raised keets. I had it sharpened and it works great.

Don't take over two nest from your breeders per s breeding season. If they only raise two or three per nest then three nest should be OK. I like to look for a 12 baby per pair average. I don't keep hens that only lay 4 or 5 eggs. I want hens that lay 8-10 eggs per nest.

Parakeets are not hard to raise. They are hard to sell if that is your aim. I am more concerned about having parakeets so I can breed for years. If I have too many then I look to sell them. You have to be able to keep a steady supply of birds before a pet shop is wanting to buy for a individual. It takes several pair of birds to be weaning 5 - 10 babies a week. Then to have that year round. It takes thirty pair of birds or more. There seems to be a glut of parakeets right now. I saw someone down in Florida that had parakeets for $2.50 ea. They eat that much feed before they are weaned and old enough to sell.
