Question:

Are parallel parking, maneuverability test required for license test in California?

I'm taking my behind the wheel test in CA in a few days. Is parallel parking required (nobody I know had to do parallel parking for their test)? I also read about a maneuverability test that is required for some states (back up, slight turn with cones); is it required in CA?

Also, does perpendicular parking (parking in a space in a parking lot) make up a large part of the driving test? As in if I don't park exactly within the lines, I would automatically fail? I've practiced, but I'm not too great at that.

  1. im taking mine in december! omg im scared! i live in CA also

but i dont think parallel parking is required

  2. sorry dont know but good luck

  3. I know they used to make you parallel park (i am not a good parker regardless what my name says!). I passed my drivers test with 2 points to spare. But that was 31 years ago!! Good luck and don't be nervous.Make sure you use your blinkers and no "caifornia stops"!

  4. Supposedly all of the above are "required" but it's up to individual testing agents to determine what they're going to test.  In other words be prepared for any or all of what you mentioned...but don't be surprised if they just have you fasten seat bealts, buckle up...drive through and out of the parking lot...do a LEGAL U turn and go back...GOOD LUCK!

  5. I think you'll be alright but you should definitely get some more practice in if you're worried about those things. You will have to do them in regular driving situation even if not on the test, so you better get confident.

  6. You are technically required to know how to parallel park; but you might not actually be tested on it depending on the situation. If the tester is feeling bitchy and there is a spot that'll allow you to do it, then you might have to; otherwise it might not come up. I didn't have to do any other kind of parking besides curbside parking (but without other cars in the way), and parking-lot parking never came up with me either.

But I took the test when I was 18, nearly 6 years ago, and the tests have gotten much stiffer since then.

The only things you'll automatically fail for are things that would put immediate danger to yourself or others. Like running a red light is an instant fail.
