Are parents that smoke really unaware of the health problems it brings ?

No we are not .Most of us are painfully aware of the risk. which speaks volumes as to how addictive smoking really is.

Typically, people think they are immune from the odds.

It's an addiction, after all, they're not reasoning about it.

Not usually. You have *no* idea of how addictive smoking is. None. There is nothing in your experience that comes even remotely close to severe nicotine withdrawal.

I don't think they are unaware, it is just that when you are addicted to smoking it completely has a hold on you.

I smoked for 15 years and of course I knew it was bad, I didn't ever smoke with my kids in the car or in the house though. But now that I do not smoke anymore I can't believe I ever did.

I see parents smoking with their kids in the car with the windows barely cracked and I think it is the most disgusting trashy thing ever, it really appalls me that people are that stupid.

I have nothing against smokers in general, most want to quit, but there is no reason why you have to do it with your kids in the house, car, etc. and yes I do think it is a form of abuse, you are forcing a child that can't fend for themselves to breath cancer causing smoke.

It's usually a combination of addiction (nicotine is just about THE most addictive drug known to man, so 'just stopping' isn't always feasible) and denial. ("My mother smoked when I was a kid and *I* turned out all right....")

I am a former smoker and never brought on any health

problems for my child.  

I went outside

I hid it from him

I changed my clothes and washed my hands afterwards

I never, ever smoked anywhere near him

Your statement isn't 100% accurate.

I can think of a million other things, concerning parenting, to vent about.

smoking in in front of a child is not the healthiest thing that a person can do.. agreed but......  why are you so concerned about that when there are so many other horrible things that go on in front of a child.  how about the mothers that allow their child to see them get beat by a bf or husband, what about the parents that abuse illegal drugs with and in front of their children and the parents that drink in access in front of them.  what about the kids that are born addicted to hard core illegal drugs.  the kids that are abandoned raped beat. seriously if the worst thing i ever do to my children is light up a cig. in front of them then i am defiantly okay with that because i will protect them from all the things in this cold hard world that should have all of this attentions tobacco is nothing compared to to the things that are children are being exposed to.  instead of going after the parents that are smoking a LEGAL cig why don't you spend your time trying to make a difference in children's lives that are getting messed up by the truly ugly things that are happening to them.

My partner and I are both smokers, and the only time we smoke with the kids is if we are outside and we move away from them. Hows that being bad parents?

Bad parents are ones that take drugs around their children, neglect their children etc..We are darn good parents!

Smoking is an addiction and unfortunately sometimes hard to give up!!
