Question:

Are peanut allergies prevalent outside the US?

I wanted to bring some homemade buckeyes as a present to my host family in Morocco (I'm from ohio :)

Since peanut butter isn't that common in Africa, do you think I have to worry about allergies like I would in the states?

  1. Peanuts are grown widely in Africa.  Peanut butter is very common in South Africa. And here is a delicious Peanut Soup recipe popular in Kenya.

Most countries outside the US do not have the "allergy epidemic" we believe we are having here.

  2. Anyone in the world can have a peanut allergy. Well for that matter anyone in the world can have an allergy to just about anything. However even if someone in your host family can not eat the "homemade buckeyes" that is okay. As with all presents "it is the thought that counts" I am sure they will appreciate that you thought of them and had the desire to share your culture with them. However.... I am not sure what the customs laws are in Morocco, but I think they may frown upon bringing food there from outside the country. Or maybe that just applies to fresh fruit? I am not sure?

  3. Peanuts and fresh peanut candies are available in Morocco. If someone is allergic to them, you can tell them the candies are made with cacao (Moroccan for peanuts). I couldn't find peanut butter anywhere I looked in Morocco, and brought a jar of that with me the last time I went there....they love to eat it with bread for breakfast or a snack. You don't have to worry about bringing homemade goodies with you either, I brought a loaf of banana bread once and no one said anything at the airport....they are mainly looking for illegal weapons and things like electronics that people like to sell on the black market.

  4. allergies  usually increase by exposure.  First  bee sting normal, next one more severe, and so on.  Ask them if they have any allergies...There's always a chance, but we still try new things..

Have a great time in Morocco!!!
