  1. The peanut's shell is woody. They are made up of the same fibrous materials as a tree trunk so are not digestible by us but neither are they harmful if some is ingested by mistake. Shells contain cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose in the same proportions as the wood of a tree but are just not shaped the same way so they are called woody rather than wood. Because of their similar physical make-up they can be used similarly where structure is not a question. Peanut shells are used to make paper or particle boards just as  trees are. Peanut hulls can be used in making rayon, mucilage for glue and garden mulch.

Another use for peanut shells is cattle feed. Just as some animals can digest grass they can also digest the cellulose in the shells. So the shells are ground and added to their feed.

Recently they have come to be used in environmental cleanup. Peanut husks are being tested for absorbing metal ions from waste water.

  4. Peanut shells actually aren't harmful if you eat them. I advise you not to, but if you do eat them, nothing bad is going to happen. They will digest just as well as most other foods.
