  1. No. If a piece of grit or some other irritant enters an oyster shell, the oyster surrounds it with nacre to stop the irritation. This forms the pearl. When men first realised this they started "oyster farms", where they put grit in the oyster to make this happen. That is what is meant by "cultured pearls" as opposed to natural pearls.


  2. No, A pearl is a peace of dirt that gets into an oysters mouth, then after a while it becomes a pearl.
