  1. Of course Bavarians are nicer.  It's the home of Bayern Munich!  That makes everyone in Munich happy.  Dunno about Stuttgart though.

  2. No, Bavaria is simply richer than any other german state, and support for rightist extremist parties is strongest in poor states, if thats what you mean.

  3. I wouldn't say that as a whole any one state is friendlier than any other state.  Each region has their own mannarisms and customs.  How you get treated depends on how you treat others.

I find that as an American living in Germany, I get treated a thousand times better because I speak German than an American that doesn't speak German.  In fact, I can speak in the Bavarian dialect, HochDeutsch, Hessish, and Odenwaelderish.  It's useful for getting around.

As far as some of the most friendly people you may find in Germany, I suggest the people that live deep in the Odenwald.  They are so friendly and kind to everyone.  Also, people in the Mittelfranken part of Bavaria are very friendly (Around Nuernberg and Ansbach), people between Munich and the Austrian border, and a large portion of most of the small towns across Germany.  When you start getting into the cities (Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Berlin, Munich, Wurzburg, etc), you will tend to find more people that aren't quite as friendly and sometimes down right rude.  But it's like that all over the world.

  4. Not at first.  In Bavaria it takes awhile for the people to warm up to you as an individual.  However, once you make a friend in Bavaria, that person is a friend for life.

I have found that the people in Northern Germany and in Rheinland-Pfalz to be friendlier right off the bat.

  5. Lots of non Germans in the Berlin area.

  6. The main difference between Bavaria and the other Länder (states) in Germany is religion: whilst the Bavarians are deeply Catholic, the rest are mainly Lutheranians. There is also a difference in language: whilst evrybody can speak the general German or Hochdeutsch, the Bayerisch dialect differs widely from the northern dialects (Prussian). And at last let us not forget that Bavaria used to be a kingdom under king Ludwig (R.Wagner's good friend) and builder of the original Neuschwanstein castle (which stood model for W. Disney's sleeping beauty castle). Even now when entering Bavaria from Austria you will first cross a barrier with blue and white coat of arms saying: Freistaat Bayern and 50 meters later a barrier with the three traditional German colors saying Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

  7. The Bavarians are just as friendly as the rest of the Germany, it just takes them a bit longer to warm up to people they don´t know. Open mind, a smile on your lips and a beer in your hand will get you quite far here..

Anyways, the Bavarians are to Germany what the Texans are to the US.. lol..
