Question:

Are people who are incarcerated in the US allowed to vote?

I'm a Canadian, and our laws here proclaim that no person who is incarcerated is allowed to vote. The reason being that a prisoner is considered having "little or no rights" while serving their sentence. Since our systems of government are so diverse, I was just curious if the laws are the same or different in this particular realm. If US prisoners are permitted to vote, please explain why.

  7. Not at all. Felons lose that right.

  8. No

  9. Actually, your statement that Canadians in prison are not allowed to vote is completely incorrect. See Elections Canada's website. I cut and pasted the below paragraph from it.

Incarcerated electors who are serving a prison sentence in a Canadian correctional institution, have the right to vote in federal elections and referendums. For details, see Voting by Incarcerated Electors. You can also consult the October 31, 2002 press release on voting rights of incarcerated electors.

  10. Prisoners are not allowed to vote while they are incarcerated.  But, when they get out and do their parole/state probation, community services, get a job and are doing well then they can start voting again.  They can go to the ACLU and get their rights in a pamphlet then go to the court house.  At the voting office or they can show their paper work that states that they are doing well and ready to vote again.
