  1. There is not a single part of the country that isn't prone to some form of natural disasters. How would you like it if your house was flooded and people said that's what you get for living in that area?

  2. Those who live below sea level are willing victims...those victims who move back below sea level are the dumbest people this planet have ever seen.

Tickled...IN ORDER...No.  Yes...unless on the autobon.  No.  No.  If they are smokers, etc. No, otherwise, yes.

To live below sea level next to hurricane prone waters is about as smart as walking through Harlem with a shirt that says "Gang Members are wimps"...IT IS JUST PLAIN STUPID!

Katie...I entered my adult life in extreme poverty.  I had NOTHING except my $500 (in today's market) car...a real piece of c**p!  At times I stayed in my car, at times I stayed in a shelter.  I spent 8 years without a phone, cable, and driving my car less than 1000 miles per year...rode my bicycle or walked everywhere else.  I saved and sacrificed and worked 3-4 jobs at a time.  (80-112 hrs/wk at times) to get myself out of that situation.....SORRY, but even poverty is no excuse for stupidity.

Dr. Phil...what a ridiculous comment.  Over 90% of America is at VERY LOW risk of natural disasters.  Below sea level in New Orleans is 100% risk.  It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when and how severe.

i'm foxy...yes...they are just as dumb.

ADDED:  There IS a solution.  Contact your legislators and demand that flood insurance be privatized.  Fire insurance is in the private sector, but flood insurance is not.  This would make it so that to build below sea level in New Orleans would cost probably $10,000/month for insurance.  Then only those stupid AND WEALTHY ENOUGH TO AFFORD TO FIX THEIR PROBLEMS would build there.

mrjonness...no, they shouldn't.  Natural disaster insurance of any kind should be privatized, this way the risk of living there is adjusted like fire insurance is...based on risk.

harry...okay, let's look.  Idaho, Montana, N and S Dakota, Nebraska, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona....the list goes on and on.  These areas are not only NOT PRONE to any form of natural disaster, they are almost immune to them.

  3. I guess you can include those multi millionaires that build their ultra homes in the middle of the woods that catch fire every single year.

  4. Victims are people who are completely blindsided by bad things that happen to them.  Cancer is a good example.

If you drive a car and you're in a crash, you are not a victim.  Part of driving is understanding that YOU MAY NOT RETURN HOME EVERY TIME YOU GO OUT.  Period.

If you live in a hurricane-prone place, a tornado-prone place or an earthquake-prone place, and one of those hits you, you are not a victim.  You should be at least aware of it, if not expecting it.

And yes, there indeed are places on earth that are not as prone to natural disasters as others.  Nobody is being forced to live below sea level at all.

EDIT: Harry, below me, and others above me: You CAN build your house out of the flood plain if you're in a flood-prone area, for one thing.  For another thing, there are places that are not as prone to natural disasters as others.  I  live in New Mexico and I can't remember the last wide-spread disaster we had here, except for when a forest fire wasted a town, (which was built out of wooden houses in a forest, and whose owners hadn't bothered to rake up their pine needles for decades.)

Let me ask you this: If you lie down and go to sleep on the freeway, would you consider yourself a victim if you got run over by a speeding car?  Now, if you lie down and go to sleep in a safer, more sheltered place, would you be less prone to being run over by a car?  (I think yes.)

  5. They are pretty much asking for it if they choose to return to a flood ravished area.

They are also people who feel they have the right to choose where they want to live and no government can tell them differently. They are the same people who immediately run to the government for help when their stupidity comes back to haunt them.

  6. That is a tough question. I doubt they are asking for it...but it makes you think"why" when they continue to have  floods and hurricanes threatening every so often.

  7. the city should pay for the c**p that happens its their choice to live their fine just dont take it out on the tax-payer

  8. So people who live in the west Willingly should not be helped in case of Earth Quake.

  9. Are people who live in 'tornado alley' really victims? Are people who willingly drive a car knowing it is the most likely form of vehicle death, really victims of car crashes? Are people who live on the east and west coasts really victims from their hurricanes that also come every year? Are people who live near the repeated wildfires in California really victims? Are people who die of lung cancer, heart disease, etc etc etc really victims? Are they all just asking for it?

    All or nothing...

    Yes, they are.

  10. Just think of certain spots in the nation where the same people get annual fires (cal and fla.), late summer hurricaines (nc, sc, fla, la., and texas). then those places on the northern end of the mississippi who always get flooded, and the drought areas.

why should everybody else have to be taxed and get higher ins. rates because some people build their homes in harm's way? gosh, what if all the well-insured millionaires and billionaires in the frisco area had another darn earthquake? is pelosi well insured?

  11. a good question.  one i've asked myself the last couple of days.  personally i wouldn't live below sea level right on the coast with america's most major river passing by overhead.  but that's just me.  so we the people will have to pay for rebuilding parts of NO yet again.  why?

people living in submersible housing must expect to get flooded.

  12. Your statement is idiotic because there is no place in the world completely safe from natural disasters. People should live whereever they want but prepare themselves for the possibilities.

  13. They are people who have chosen to accept the consequences of their choice of where to live.  Because they CHOOSE to live below sea level and in Hurricane Alley they should be held responsible for the costs associated with rebuilding, repairing or replacing their homes and other property.  Taxpayers should not be forced to pay a single penny of the "recovery costs".  No insurance?  Too bad.  Not my fault.

  14. Natural disasters happen everywhere. Blizzards up north, earthquakes to the west, flooding/drought in the middle, blizzards and hurricanes to the east. I can see your point however. If you KNOW the city is below sea level and you move back there you have no reason to complain when it floods again. It's like the people back east that build their houses on stilts right on the water. When a hurricane comes and destroys the houses they want sympathy even when everyone knew that was bad place to build!

  15. The local government was foolish to cave in and let these really low areas become traditional housing again.

After the 1964 good Friday earthquake in Anchorage Alaska they turned the effected areas into parkland and forbid housing ..

The other option would be to build similar structures to those used on the Mississippi flood plane where the lower floor has essentially blow out panels and no living space. this effective put s the house on stilts.

  16. according to my question I posed

Many people think it you live where earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, or any other malady you deserve to be a victim.  I do not think it wise to blame victims.

  17. Yes, and people who live in California are asking for an earthquake and brush fires.  People in the Midwest are just begging for tornadoes and flooding.  People in the Plains are just in line for the next blizzard.  People in the Northeast are asking for a Nor'easter.

    **** happens wherever.

As a side note, I've read your questions here, and I have to say you're asking for a Darwin award.

  18. Well, try to imagine being born into extreme poverty and not having the financial stability to move to a different city.
