They're a fruit ... grown on a tree.   Berries are grown on bushes or small plants with runners (strawberries); and tomatoes are grown on vines.....

Persimmons are a fruit grown on a tree.  There are 2 types, one is eaten raw like an apple, the other is cooked.  They are not berries or tomatoes.
