Are pet birds smelly?

I would really like to have a pet bird. One of those little colorful ones. Do they stink? My mom would not allow it if it stank. Are they easy to take care of? How much does it cost to care for it approx? Thanks so much :)

  1. If you want a pet bird, canaries or finches don't require much of your time but they are very pretty.

Parakeets do require some social time with you, but not as much as parrots.

I don't suggest you getting a parrot. They are pretty. But loud, messy, and stinky. They only make good pets if you are very very dedicated!

All birds will be stinky! But not as so much if you clean the cage regularly (at least once a week, replacing paper at the bottom of the cage daily) and keep new toys in there. They won't be too smelly if you remember to do all of that!

Any pet birds are not like cats or dogs, though. So research as much as possible and think a lot before purchasing one!

    Good Luck! ^^

  2. How about you go do your research and then I'll tell you.

  3. No, not really. I have ten birds, they're not smelly. Virtually all pet birds won't be smelly if you clean their cage often enough and give fresh water & food.

Ahh, you must mean budgies (I have 7!) If you only buy one or two, they're pretty easy to take care of. But if you buy many, (like me) it gets pretty tough.

    BUDGIES:

    Approximately it would cost:

    $12.99-$19.99 for the bird

    $20.00-$30.00 for the cage

$5.00 to $10.00 for some toys

$5.00 for a big bucket of food

    $5.00 for treat or millet

$3.00 for grits (so the food can be digested right)

    Approx. TOTAL: $55.00 to $70.00

(for everything, some stuff is optional, but is ESSENTIAL to the bird)

Those are pretty much the basic things you would buy for a new bird, although there are many other options. You can find ALL of the above things at Petsmart or Petco.

  4. They won't stink if you ever clean the cage, but they are not easy to take care of.  If your family uses nonstick cookware, you'll have to replace it all with something else, like stainless steel, because Teflon is very deadly to birds.  You also can't use air fresheners or scented candles or anything like that.  They have very sensitive respiratory systems and therefore can easily get sick or die from chemicals in the air.  Plus you have to have an avian vet you can get to because birds do need vet care occasionally, but not all vets treat birds.  Also, you have to make sure the bird doesn't get toxic metal into its system, which trust me, is harder than it sounds because sometimes cages and toys have those, so you really have to know about what you're getting.

Also, what particular species do you want?  They all have the above in common, but you can't just get a "little colorful one" because there are so many different ones that do have different requirements from each other and even different lifespans, and you should never get a pet without knowing that that's the species you really want to take care of for the rest of its life.

  5. Not if you bathe them and clean their cages out on a regular basis.

  6. Well, I have 5 birds and they don't stink. They are very easy to take care of but the need attention. If you and your family are out out allot, I would suggest not getting one. But you just have to change their food, water, and cage every day. Very quick, takes about 5 minutes tops. However, If you want a bird, you need to get two because they get lonely. Parakeets or Budgies are about twenty dollars. Bigger birds like cockatieals are about eighty dollars.

  7. of course their smelly. but thats just birds. also I would think they are easy to take care of. and I dont nkwo whitch bird your talking about. maybe you could give more info.......? also it depends on where you live and what store.
