They are very much illegal to possess in California without a special permit, which I have never heard of being granted to a private citizen for a personal pet. Generally they are granted to people and institutions using them for educational programs only.  If you are found with a ferret, you are fined, the ferret is confiscated and either euthanized or taken to a shelter in a neighboring state.  All it takes is one person with a grudge against you to report your illegal pet for you to have a heavy fine levied against you and your pet confiscated.

Add: In addition to being illegal to buy or sell, it's also illegal to possess them or bring them into the state.  There are ag inspectors at most of the CA borders who will confiscate them and fine you.  The laws are very strictly enforced if CA Fish & Game finds out about a violation, and all it takes is one person to report you.

technically they're illegal to own in California, (you can't sell or purchase ferrets here) but you can goto another state (it's only illegal in Hawaii & California) & get a ferret.

in all the pet stores in California, they sell plenty of ferret supplies, & many vets will still see ferrets.

so, be careful if you try to get one, but it's not too difficult. :)

SORRY It's illegal to buy, sell and own a ferret in California. It has something to do with agriculture. It's also illegal in New York so California isn't the only state with that law. But in South Dakota were i live they cost about $129.99 at Petco

but the cages can cost any were from $50.00 to $199.99 for a good one like mine. I own 3 ferrets so i got a 4 level cage for them and they love it

you can get them though it is illegal. The Governor has been said to have 3 even, though i'm not sure if that is actually factual. You can purchase them out of state and bring them here and i doubt anyone will say anything. I can't help you on the cost though but i bet they are a little more then a chinchilla which can cost up to $300 in pet stores and more from breeders.
