Question:

Are polyurethane Foam blankets unhealthy?

I have a polyurethane foam blanket on my bed, I was not aware that it was a synthetic fabric. My son wants one for his bed, but I am concerned about the chemicals. Is this made from oil based products and are the chemicals unhealthy for humans? I cannot find much information on this issue. Does anyone have any ideas?

  1. Over time a urethane foam pad will start to shed bits of urethane. This is different lengths of time, but is clearly accelerated by sunlight and extensive flexing. Otherwise there is no proven health problem for most people. They appear to have far less allergy problems than many natural products.

Unlike many mattresses, one can wash them every year (or as often as they take on an odour,)

This has however resulted in mold problems where the mattress pad has not been adequately dried before returning to service.

  2. I recommend buying what is called a "Mink Blanket" They are made in Asian countries such as China, Taiwan and Korea. They are HEAVY....rather thick and provide excellent thermal protection during the cold season. We purchased many of these when I lived in Korea and we just love them. Made from all natural materials. They come in many sizes. A queen sized one would cost about $40-50 dollars. You can find them in the Import stores, especially the Asian Import Stores. Good Luck
