I've heard that they can confuse the reader and the writer when not done properly.

  1. Being a first-time novelist has nothing to do with it. Plenty of first-time novelists have proved themselves to be a master of their craft. In answer to your question, though, there's no reason a prologue should ever confuse someone if it's written well. And remember - everything must serve a purpose in writing. Are you writing a prologue for the h**l of it, or is there a deeper purpose and you're trying to set up the reader's mind for various ideas/themes/etc.?

I recommend you read a lot of prologues to see what they do and why the author included them.

  2. The best thing for a first time novelist is to write and write and write. Then go back and edit.

I understand your question, but if you let these things bother you, you won't finish your book. So, wirite the prolouge and epilougue, then if they don't work cut them. You may find that they give you ideas and backstory for the rest of your book even if you don';t use them .

    Good luck.
