Are pssoms the same creature as the species called mangoose in jamaica?

the mongoose in jamaica looks like rats only alot bigger with longer tails i am wondering if it is that we really ave possoms but by tradition we call them mangoose

a believe that a mongoose is more like a ferret - but larget.  A possum is larger bodied, long rat-like bald tail.  They are different.  The mongoose is the one you might of seen in children's stories - it is the one that attacks the snakes - like a cobra.  And the possum is the one portrayed as sleeping upside down in a tree
