I am planning on buying a puppy very soon. I live in Connecticut and there is a store that exclusively sells puppies. Here is their website- loveapuppy.com So basically, as convenient as it would be to travel 1 hour and pick up my puppy, I do not want one from a puppy mill. So I will give them a call to ask some serious questions, but I will probably get lies for answers. For all I know the puppies come from breeders like they say, but I want more opinions. So, go ahead and answer away!

  1. Hi Dear,

Some of the puppies pet store gets are from some puppie mills, but there are some breeder who will sell the whole litter to pet stores.Check the pet store out do some research on the Internet before you decide to buy a pup from a pet store.

You know a lot of animal shelters have puppies and younger dogs who would love to be adopted. You would be saving their life and they would love you forever My Friend.

    Your Friend,

  2. Actually no. Some pet stores, especially in small towns, get their puppies from one or two professional local breeders that they have known most of their lives. They usually only have puppies available certain times of the years. Most employees at the larger pet stores are trained to not give out any information about where the puppies come from. A local vet usually know the reputation of pet store owners, but there is some kind of professional code that keeps them from coming right out and telling you not to but at certain places. Bless my vet as he did tell me not to bury any pets locally. That was enough for me. You could go to the pet store and ask questions before you buy. Usually if you ask what kind of health guarantee they have, they will say something like "if you have a problem bring it back", but they don't have anything in writing. The majority of pet store customers do not take the puppies back because by the time problems start showing up they are so in love with the puppy, they can't stand the thought of giving it up, even if it is sick. Always remember that a sales person can only keep their job if they sale. Their main and only objection is to make the sale and get your money. Other wise they wouldn't have a job there or anywhere else. Traveling a little ways if necessary, just strengthens your committment to the little life you are going to be totally responsible for. Good luck. Don't settle for less because it is more conveinient.

  3. Not always. We had two American Eskimo spitz and they got breed  accidentally, yes it does happen no matter how careful you are.She had puppies 6 of them We had no way traveling and working to keep them we sold them to a pet shop and they all found homes. The male got fixed immediately, the female after giving birth. They were perfectly healthy dogs, vet checked no problems. Our girl is now 8 years old.Still no problems the male died, after being hit by a car.So not all are unscrupulous. We just simply couldn't keep 8 dogs.Oh and the reason they weren't fixed before is because the vet said they were too Young to breed so we didn't get worried like we should have they were 8 months old barely.

  4. PETSTORE ARE FAT LIERS.

    1. NEVER BUY A PUPPY just LOOKS, colour along, fur type-COLOUR, fur type and looks HAS NO INDICATION OF DOGS TEMPERMENT!

    2. Consider your lifestyle-

    4. Are you out more then 8hours a day

    5. Consider your energy requirements, Size, Grooming.

    6. Don't just buy because someone says this is the dog for you, people particular on yahoo answer will give you there particular favourite breed& what suits them, not what actually suit you.

    7. Read all you can-THERE are alot of false information on the web and in books about different dog breed.

8 DON'T TRUST THOSE DOG BREED SELECTORS-MOST OF THE RESULTS ARE INCORRECT. Ex i search large breed dogs, and the Pomeranian came up, which of cause is a toy dog breed!!

    9. NEVER BUY FROM A PETSTORE, BACKYARD BREEDER, PUPPY MILL OR NEWSPAPER, DON'T BUY FROM NEXT DAY PETS OR DOG BREED INFO, RESCUE AN ADULT DOG OR SHELTER PUPPY!

NO REPETABLE BREEDER WOULD SELL TO A PETSTORE.

Lol, I went to this petstore the other day and i said where Did you get the puppies from? they said the breeders, they said they knew the breeders.

I ask them about a particular dog that was a MUTT=Golden Retriver x Poodle=whether they knew the owners.

They said they did, but IF THEY REALLY did THEY would have BEEN able to TELL me whether the golden retriver or poodles was the puppies mother. CLEARLY they DIDN'T KNOW the parents!

ALSO NOTE PETSTORE DON'T TEMPERMENT TEST there BREEDING DOGS.

PETSTORE DOGS are  aggressive with PEOPLE & other animals!, have numerous behavioural problems and other social issues as there ripped away from their mother's far too young & other health issues.

My parents brought one a Labrador x Golden Retriver not known where they came from and at the time i had no knowledge of puppy mills, she was  8weeks old.

Yes she is one of the ones that does have aggression, and numerous other behavioural issues and she does health problems, she had surgery when she was only 2 1/2 to have crucial ligament injury in her rear leg.that is very young for a dog to have this injury

THEY ARE MAINLY from PUPPY mills, and some do come from Backyard breeder. who have the same issues that puppy mill dogs have.

Puppy love is PUPPY MILL & LIERS TOO.

NO WAY would a REGISTERED breeders SELL to this petstore.PUPPY MILLS & BACKYARD BREEDER'S DO NOT DO THIS TEST FOR OFA, THAT IS AN OUTRIGHT LIE!

When my current dog time is up, I sure won't be going to a petstore, there are far too cruel, I refused to even buy toys at a petstore now!

I will be adopting from an animal shelter or pound.

    Prices

    Puppy mill/puppy farms=4000+

    Petstore=500+

Shelter/Pound=Under 300 but does vary from shelter to shelter.

You really need to think about the breed BEFORE you rush of and get a puppy

BEAGLES-Lots of incorrect info in BOTH books & Internet but here the shocking truth! Beagles are HIGHLY energetic BREED, who being a scent hound, shouldn't be let off- lead as THIS BREED would just follow scent-trails. They love to dig, bark and howl and require 4KM DAILY WALKS, they are stubburn and difficult to train, but do require intensive training! Experience owners. Not good breed for 1st time owners!

a very common breed to be surrendered at shelters, so please research this breed before you decide to adopt. They require very tolerant owners! Not suitable with small animals.

    Akitas

    Temperament:

The breed can be impulsive and playful as well as calm and docile. This dog is large, strong, intelligent and eager to please its master. Akita puppies and adolescents require early obedience training if they are to be raised as family dogs with children. The breed’s guarding instincts can be a problem with strangers and even strange children. Akita puppies should be socially trained to accept strangers and strange children. Because the dogs were bred to be bold and fearless hunters and fighters, they must undergo firm, fair and sensitive obedience training to curb their tendency to fight with other dogs. Akitas have long-term memories and can’t be ignored otherwise they will become resentful. The breed requires lots of attention otherwise it will become domineering and even problematic with children. Akitas should always be supervised around small animals and small children. Children should be taught not to tease these dogs. These dogs can be trained to be good watch dogs and alert and protective guard dogs. These dogs do best with experienced dog owners.Require 4km daily walks

    Border Collie

    Owner Level:

    Experience, active and highly involved.

    Who should own this breed?

People who love outdoor activities and regular daily exercise would love a Border Collie. If you enjoy teaching a dog amazing new tricks on a regular basis, you would be one very entertaining Border Collie owner. If you would like extreme devotion, affection and attention from your dog, the Border Collie is for you. If, on the other hand, you live a quiet sedentary lifestyle, don't want to be bothered with tossing the ball every day or teaching new tricks to your dog, and installed new white carpeting you wish to remain unstained, FORGET owning a Border.Require 2 long walks minimum of 4km daily!

  5. I think it would be great if you got a rescue dog, too.. sometimes puppies from these pet shops aren't in the best of health, especially if they do come from puppy mills.  And sometimes these puppies come with a lot of health problems.

You might be better off to get a young dog from the local dog shelter.

    take care.

  6. Puppies at pet stores are either from puppy mills or back yard breeders. Either way, you do NOT want to get on.

Some CLAIM that the puppies are well bred, but this is not true. A RESPONSIBLE breeder breeds to better the breed. They make no money, and spend thousands on health screenings. A responsible breeder would NEVER sell their dogs to a pet shop. NEVER. If a breeder does, they are only out for the money, and should not be breeding.

Some pet stores, like PetSmart, do not sell dogs, but they have dogs up for adoption from rescue groups. If these are the kinds of dogs available in pet stores, go for it, otherwise, do not.

Although the store looks like it is run well, it still SELLS puppies, and I will never agree with that. As I said, breeders breeding just for money.

  7. They either come from puppy mills or BYB's, no reputable breeder would sell their pups without knowing exactly where they were going.

Try looking in your local shelters and rescues.

  8. YES they all come from mills- unless you want to consider "commertial breeders" as different than puppy mill - the difference being they actually trouble themselves to feed the dogs- they still mass produce on wire & similar set-ups

without even checking the site I can say "loveapuppy is a mil/commertial breeder who has taken to direct merchandsising over the internet - reputable breeders have sites Like "DAISY HILL breeders of quality Dalmation DOGS"

here is a well thought out indication of what to look for red alerts (its a mill) yellow (caution) & green (good indication of a GOOD breeder)

    http://www.timbreblue.com/about-whippets...

  9. yes yes yes NOT REPUTABLE BREEDER WOULD SELL TO PET SHOPS never ever

  10. Most are, some are supplied by byb.Think of the type of breeder that would allow their pups to be sold in pet stores and that will give you the quality and health of the pups sold

  11. They are nearly always from there.  Why not just get a shelter dog?  There should be alot of puppies this time of year.

  12. yes - always. a responsible breeder does not want their hard earned litter sitting in a perspex box. if you want a puppy either see a reputable and registered breeder or better yet rescue a pound puppy!

  13. not always, some may be from just normal people who wanted to try breeding just for fun, but they mostly are from puppy mills.

Get a shelter dog or puppy; they need a home where they will be loved.

    Puppy mill dogs are just bred for money, think;

would you rather support a buisness which abuses dogs all for money, or would you rather save a dogs life??

  14. The Humane Society of the Untited States estimates that 99% of all puppies in pet stores are from puppy mills. Call them puppy mills, call them commercial breeders, call them dog farms, call them whatever you want, they are all the same.

***No responsible breeder would EVER sell their puppies to pet stores!***

  15. Yes, responsible breeders never sell to pet stores. Why ? They want to screen homes for their puppies , to make sure the dog will fit in the family.

  16. most of the time they are but some times the breeders will give them to the pet shops to sell them but i suggest getting one from a breeder not a pet shop!
