If self is referred to being that which can step back and objectively observe the body and mind then yes, but if self is defined as that arm that itches, then that is biology.

Whatever draws us upwards is religion. The inner, individual self is ever drawn upwards by the outer, universal self.  'Only' mind and ego stand in the way .

I think you are already in the right place though, philosophy is all about introspection, and application of personal insight of the world around us.

plz no thumbs down for mentioning satanism, i do not condone the practice, it simply suits the question, remember the devils sin was pride...

In a way, they are, because the self is how we know ourselves to be--It is ego in a sense--and it is our own first personal temple, before religion, or spirituality is either cast upon us or developed through our own personal searching process. If we are all destined to be here to learn lessons, then we need to learn an awful lot about ourselves in order to respond to religion in any way. Finding our own particular place in the ultimate schema, in a religious sense, would be figuring out how your own attributes can serve the larger good, and in so doing, give glory to God.

So, yes I think learning about the self is religious seeking in a way, because you need to know the self before you can find your place within a religion, and or know if religion itself suits you at all.

Soul searching is the only way to grow, in any sense, whether it be relationships, religion, career choice, or just about anything--in order to progress, you have to learn and grow.
