  1. No they are not the same thing..

Recon Marines are used at the battalion level for reconnaissance needs. And they will not go any further then this level.

Force Recon is where you use to go to after you served your time in Recon..Force is used at the top level for missions of all types including special ops.

Today Force Recon no longer exist and was dissolved into MARSOC..

To make it simple for you remember this. Recon before Force. These are two different units one which no longer exists.

  2. i think they are the same thing.

  3. It was when I was in the outfit at CamPen, Ca.

Guess they now go with 'expeditionary force'.

  4. Those two terms may or may not refer to the same outfit.  Force Recon Marines operate in small numbers and are as well trained, in many aspects, as the SEALS, and have many of the same missions.  The tend to serve the MEU or MarDiv level.

Recon forces, however, are somewhat different.  Battalion Recon and Light Armored Recon, for examples, operate closer to the main force, and serve what I would describe as a classic close recon role.  Force Recon serves a much longer range reconnaissance role, operate in smaller numbers, deploy often by parachute or other covert means.  By way of comparison, Battalion Recon serves the Battalion or Marines (Regimental) level, and Battalion Recon Marines recieve only some additional training.

Just my experience, including seven months as a Light Armered Recon Marine in Saudi and then (briefly) Kuwait.

  5. Yes they are the same exact same thing. You will notice in the military there is more than one way to explain something.

  6. No. Force Recon is as the name states. They are more of a force and do more things similar to the Navy SEAL's while still doing Reconnaissance. While Recon Marines just do Recon. They just sneak around spying on the enemy etc. Without attacking.
