  1. Yes, but it's usually that way in a free market economy.  Employment is "at will," which means that the company can let you go as long as they don't do it for illegal reasons (such as racial discrimination) as outlined by various laws.

It's common to see these news stories during times when the economy is suffering.

  2. Pretty much, since unemployment is at an all-time high, there are more than enough potential new employees to fill any empty positions..

  3. It's called a business cycle, and it happens every 5-10 years.  Every time, more jobs are created after the slowdown picks up again.  Employees have been disposable for a long time now, you just haven't been alive long enough.

Layoffs will continue, and the economy has to work through bad debts, hammerred banks, too much real estate and other problems.  It WILL get better!

PS Unemployment is NOT at an all-time high--nowhere near.

  4. well it isnt really something new, it has always  been that way. if there is someone that will work cheaper and harder than a current employee and you are the financial manager and your bonus is set off of payroll, what choices would you make? corporate business is a not so nice kind of business, there is always someone out that has more skills, will work more hours, will work harder and they are gunning for your job. you need to earn your keep, you are getting paid to do a job and if you are not meeting all the needs of a company or someone else is willing to do what you are not willing to do, you lose. if you choose to play the corporate game, you better be playing to win or the next guy will take your spot and the line for the next guy is getting longer and longer so be prepared to prove yourself again and again.
