Are "recycled" composted solid wastes from a water treatment facility safe to use for growing food crops?

My local water treatment facility composts the solid wastes and sells it. I was wondering if the composting made the materials safe to use for food crops. I'd heard E Coli is a potential problem with use of human waste products.

  1. the fertilizer is heated so nearly all the bacteria are killed.
