I've heard that in some parts of Europe that racism is worse than America. I'm a Black American senior in High School that wants to go to Amersterdam/Europe to study Physics,Electrical/Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. Would I be better off staying in Massachusetts or going abroad.

I've also heard that in some of these countries there are n**i/Skinhead groups that beat on blacks.

Could you tell me your expirience.

  1. Most of Dutch people doesn't have any problems with black people. Lot's of the black people have a good job, good education and there are lots of opportunities in The Netherlands. There are a lot of black people from former Dutch colonies like Suriname and also from The Netherlands Antilles.

There are some problems between the Dutch and Arabic community, but that's not worse than the US.

  2. Im white so can only go on what I see, and dont have the direct first hand experience.  The more blacks there are in a country the better the ability to fit in.  Holland and UK are good and people take racial abuse very seriously.  For example look at the soccer teams for each country in Europe and you'll find that Holland, England, France all have a high proportion of blacks, and its not considered anything abnormal.  Much like eye colour is not seen as being a distinguishing factor.  Whereas some of the eastern block european countries have none and generally are a little more backwards in their view on integration.  The one thing I would say is that being American might be more of a problem in terms of acceptance than colour of skin.  But thats the side effect of invading some countries for oil.

  3. Race relations are most deffinetly better in Europe than in America, I have never heard of any n**i or skinhead groups although I wouldnt deny that they exist, I couldnt believe for a minute that there would be more in Europe than in America!  There is a large black population in central europe and peoples attitude to colour is completley different, I would go for it, I am sure you would have a great experience.

  4. No. I'm American and I live in Spain and have lived in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland and Sweden. Europeans hate non Europeans and they don't hide it. Here in Spain people are more open about it than they were 6 years ago when I moved here. I think they are getting annoyed with all the crime and wages being lowered by all the immigrants here.

USA has way better race relations. infact I would say from all the countries I have been to, USA is the best in races getting together except for maybe Madagascar
