yes they are, radar detectors are legal in CA, radar JAMMERS are illegal in all 50 states. So your good if you have a laser detector. I've been pulled over while having a radar detector (kind of ironic - but it was for no front license plate so the cop didn't have any radar on) and all the cop said was "does that thing actually work for you?" Plus if it was illegal places like Circuit City and Best Buy wouldn't be selling them here in CA!

Radar detectors are legal in California, but it is illegal to mount anything to your windshield. Your options are to mount the radar detector somewhere else inside your car (your visor is a great place), or use a hidden, remote-mounted radar detector in your front grill or on your ski rack.

Do NOT expect your radar detector to protect you from police laser! The best radar detectors also detect laser, but the laser only has to hit your vehicle for 0.2 seconds to read your speed; not nearly enough time to adjust if your laser alarm alerts. If you are concerned about police laser as well as radar, you'll need a laser jammer. Like radar detectors, laser jammers are also legal in nearly every state, but NOT California.
