Are ring tail cats located in Virginia?

Around Fairfax County/Vienna, around 10 am, I saw what was most definitely a light brown squirrel with a white and grey ringed tail. It was moving exactly like a squirrel, but still people are saying it was a ring tail cat. It was in front of a park, namely a tennis court, small gravel basketball court, and an elevated basketball court. There isn't a whole lot of trees, so I was wondering what it was?

Similiar to this, but a squirrel. The stripes were also less difinitive.

  1. Ringtails are not native to Virginia, they live in much of the western US and parts of Mexico.  You probably saw a strange looking squirrel

  2. There is no such thing as a ringtail cat. There is a ringtail, however - its scientific name is Bassariscus astutus. It belongs to the family Procyonidae, the raccoon family, not the cat family, Felidae. It looks like this:
