CO2 levels are rising, trees use CO2 for photosyntheses. Has human produced CO2 lead to more rapid tree growth since the start of the Industrial Revolution?

  1. Trees use carbon dioxide. carbon dioxide can be good for humans too because trees take in carbon dioxide and release energy so thats good for humans.

  2. if we see this as concept- co2 proportional to plant growth, yes it is. and the co2 concentration is increasing steadily- according to mauna loa monitoring activity. but the truth is the co2 level accumulated in atmosphere due to anthropogenic activities also together with dust and particles. these dust and particles adhere t leaves surface and blocked the transpiration rate. that's why the increasing co2 level is bad to our environment- not because the co2 itself but the combination of the dust and other particles do harm to our plant.

  3. There's more than enough CO2 naturally occuring for trees to photosynthesise.

There's a limit to how much CO2 they can absorb and if the atmosphere contains more than that limit then the surplus CO2 has no effect.

If levels fall below the maxumum uptake from the trees then photosynthesis will be reduced.  If there was no upper limit then trees would absorb all the CO2 and would grow at a fantastic rate.

  4. Trees will grow faster in higher concentrations of CO2.  Experiments on orange trees in greenhouses with concentrations of 700 ppm (about 3 times the earth's current level) showed the trees grew twice as fast and produced more foliage and fruit.

But trees are only temporary carbon sinks. Eventually they die and decompose, releasing the carbon back into the air.  Mankind chops down trees faster than they can grow back.

  5. CO2 is good for trees, but there is plenty of naturally occurring CO2. We have destroyed musch more than we have helped. SO.....CO2 increases the rate of growth, but it doesn't really matter because we rising CO2 levels are eventually going to hurt much much more than it helps.

  6. In many greenhouses farmers pump  in co2, and the plants grow more rigorously, with less water than under normal conditions.  This might indicate that the plants are starved for co2.
