A puppy was abandoned on our farm and we took him in. We took pictures and looked some stuff up and found out he is probably a rottweiler (definitely at least part rottweiler). I have two little boys (age 3 and 4months), and a few years ago a baby was killed by a rottweiler in our town. Are they naturally mean, or if we train him up nice and stuff will he be a good dog? We have only had him 12 hours but I'm really attached!! :)

  1. No, they are not always mean.

Dogs are mean when they're taught to be mean.  Socialize him well, take him to obedience classes, and you will be fine.

  2. No they are not mean at all,now i will tell you that they are more of a boy dog because they like to get ruff not bite but jump up on you just to play and as a puppy you will catch them nibbleing on you just to play but thats it,

  3. no.. i knew the sweetest rottweiler dog.

  4. No. I had a female for about 5 years and she was a wonderful, loving dog. My brother-in-law had a female for about 12 years and she was great also.  I think it has a lot to do with the amount of time you spend with them and how you care for them.

  5. No they are not mean by nature.  Any dog can be raised to be mean or friendly.  I know several people with Rottweilers and they are great dogs...usually gentle giants.  I think it would be fine if you kept him, especially since he's just a puppy.  He probably hasn't had any time to pick up bad habits yet.

  6. Rottys are very loyal loveable dogs. its not the dogs breed that is mean its the dog. train him right and he will be very loyal. how old is he?

  7. I had a rottweiler and he was a really good dog.  I had to give him away because he got to big for me to take care of properly.  But they are very loyal and protective dogs.  A lot of people are afraid of them though just because they are a rottweiler.  Train him right and you couldn't ask for a better dog.  He will love your kids and guard them from any harm.

  8. Rottweilers are not mean dogs.. You raise him nicely, train him socialize him around other people and dogs and he'll be a great dog.

  9. No, they are not naturally mean. Rottweilers are actually good family pets that are very loyal, protective, and good with kids. They do need training, like any dog. If your puppy is well socialized and trained I'm sure it will be a great pet. Because of their size they can be dangerous when poorly trained, but that's true of any large dog. Never leave children, especially babies, alone with a dog. That's just common sense.

  10. I believe that however the owner is the dog will turn out the same.

  11. no...i don't believe that ANY dog is naturally mean..the reason dogs become mean is because they are treated bad..and are abused.

            STOP BSL!

  12. I have only met one "mean" rottie.  Even he was not really mean, he was doing his job.  He was meant to guard my friend's dad's shop yard.  He did not bark or growl or anything unless you touched the fence.  Then he would give you that, "Back off....I am warning you..."  sideways look while growling at you.  I have no doubt that he meant to be respected.  If I had went into the fenced area alone he probably would have eaten me alive.  But if I went in with my friend's dad, he was a big ole loveable boy.  He loved to be pet and loved on.  But, if you were not with the family, you were in trouble.  That is how he was trained, and he was really good at his job.

Every other Rottie I have ever known are like really big lap dogs.  So I would say keep the dog.  I think it would be great to have a pal for your boys to grow up with, and you could be comforted in the fact that the dog would be protective of you and the whole family.

  13. No.  The one's I've dealt have been very good with children.  That doesn't mean they should be left alone with young children.  Always oversee them when they are playing together.

  14. NO THEY ARE NOT NATURALLY MEAN! it is the way you treat the dog, and how socialized the dog is, if you beat a dog, they will grow to resent you.. if you abandon the dog with no social skills the dog will be afraid of humans, other dogs and cats, and it might attack to protect itself.. but if you raise it like you should with any dog, it will be just like any dog. And because of these incorrect consumptions, many people want to kill these dogs for their breed. It's bad enough that there is racism amoung humans but animals? COME ON!

  15. hi,

Rottweilers were originally bred to drive cattle to market. Later they were used to pull carts for butchers. They were among the earliest police dogs and serve with honor in the military. Most important, they are popular family guardians and friends.

  16. Rottweilers are a little different than your average dog. Not that they should be condemned or anything, but the upbringing is very important. They are extremely loyal and loving dogs, but they are suited and bred for and as Guard dogs. You probably wont have a problem with him since hes a puppy, but you will have to use some common sense when it comes to who, and when he will be exposed to. Especially when he gets big and powerful. Great dogs.

  17. I am glad you asked this because i just bought a rottweiler and he is the sweetest thing.... You have to put in time with these kind of dogs you can't just ignore it..... If you love it and your putting in time with it you and your boys should be fine..... Now if you are putting in time with it and it snaps at you one day its time to get rid of it..... Hope this helps... Bye
