  1. A  satellite state is a country or nation under heavy influence and or control by another country.  I am sure they exist but maybe under another moniker.

A strong case can be made for N. Korea, Cuba and Israel.  N. Korea borders Russia in the Far East and is in perfect position to be a satellite state.  Cuba's role as a satellite state may be diminishing with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the approaching end to Castro's reign.  Israel depends heavily on the United States, receiving about 6 billion dollars annually, mostly to fund the military.  I'm sure Israel considers themselves a partner or an ally rather than a satellite state.

The Commonwealth of Independent States, created by Russia after their dissolution, consists of eleven former Soviet Republics.   It's almost as if they never parted.  Some of these newly created CIS countries probably fit the definition of a satellite state.

Any country receiving large amounts of economic assistance from another country is a good candidate.
