Are scientists going to produce electricity with the atom smasher here in the U.S.?

  1. No, but electricity can be produced with another kind of atomic smasher: A tokamak (fusion reactor).


  2. nam is right, you use electricity to run an atom smasher, not gain.

  3. If by "atom smasher" you mean particle accelerator, then, no.  A particle accelerator >uses< energy, lots of it, to  get particles moving at a significant percentage of the speed of light.  This is done to study the results of collisions of high-speed particles, but it does not produce more energy that it uses and the physics are such that it cannot possibly do so.  There are a number of nuclear power plants in the US that do produce electricity, but public safety concerns (and hysteria) have stood in the way of building any more for decades.
