Are scooters feasible in the Virgin Islands as primary transportation? St Thomas?

I know the weather would allow it, but I'm not sure about the elevation. Is it too steep? Thanks for answering!

  1. I think you could get just about everywhere you wanted

to on St. Thomas on a scooter.  There are a couple

amazingly steep hills but if you stick to the main

roads you wouldn't have any problem just riding a

scooter.  I've seen dozens of tourists tackle the

hills with those things and they made it.

  2. Scooters are commonly used in the Virgin Islands... but only by tourists.

The terrain on St. Thomas is INCREDIBLY hilly.  This does mean that some cars huff and puff up the 25% slopes... but you shouldn't have to worry about that with a scooter.  Though the engine isn't that powerful, the scooter is light enough to more than make up for it.  That shouldn't be a problem at all.  Make sure you wear your helmet (one of the few things cops will pull you over for) and watch out for drunken drivers...even at 11 am.

The easiest place to get a scooter is in Havensight, across the street from the Wendy's (the only Wendy's).

Oh, they also have a tryke-scooter (three wheels, two in front, one in back) with two seats.  It looks like a very strange little car and I've only seen them on the road once (cause they look a little like something out of Tron).

  3. No, I would not use a scooter as my primary transportation. Rent a jeep much safer. St Thomas is not only hilly but has many curves. You ride/drive on the left. I would not want to be on a scooter at night or in the rain.

    Good luck and be safe)
