  1. Sevylor kayaks are inflateables. They are flexible and hence quite forgiving of poor paddling. They can obounce off rocks. They can usually be used without instruction or experience. 'Rubber Duckies'. They are great for a day of casual fun in the river or lake. They are not for grade 3 or higher whitewater. You do need a PFD and helmet if on a river. Check local water laws about PFDs.

  2. Depends on what you are going to be using them for.  And which type of sevylor you're going to be getting.

I've used heavy-duty sevylors for class-3 white water boating and they work very well.  But for heavier duty white-water they would be dangerous for the inexperienced, and even the experienced boater should expect to swim.  I've done class-4 but wouldn't recommend that to any but the more experienced boaters.

On flat calm water any of the sevylors would work for general fun near-shore playing around.  But they are susceptible to wind and can get pushed around a lot, so for any kind of distance paddling a hard-shell boat would be preferred.
