Are sharks protected in the USA?

Are there any laws that protect sharks in the USA? Many are on the brink of extinction just wondering if there are any laws in the books?

Yes, some species are protected.  You may not be aware of this but the USA has Marine Refuges.  Those are areas protected from commercial fishing, including shark fishing.

sharks fishing doesn't have very many laws and the ones we have are weak. the only place sharks are safe are in the marine sanctuaries around the world. we don't have to much of a shark fishing problem in the US because shark fin soup (which is what is mainly fueling this over fishing crisis) is not very popular here, in asian waters however there is a HUGE over fishing problem because there are no strong laws on the hunting of these animals.

and to those people who answered and then said things like "i think" or "maybe": this is important, without sharks the ocean will die, so you may want to go learn about it.

in general, the law of the land says we are not allowed to disturb or kill wildanimals--look, but don't touch. for game species (anything you're allowed to hunt) you need to have a license and hunt no more than you are allowed to hunt durning a particular season--otherwise you're a poacher.

I don't believe there are laws to protect sharks to be honest. Most people fear them so much they probably feel it would be a blessing to lose them. I am a hardcore shark fan and i feel we should protect them especially because they are needed for a proper ocean ecosystem. I am certain however that there are many groups set out to help sharks that you can always donate to! Are you watching shark week too??? haha!
