Someone told me that shih tzu dogs sometimes get way too aggressive in defending children. I was hoping to get one, but we babysit often so I need to know how these dogs are with kids.

  1. It depends on the children. If they treat the dog gently and with respect, then they are good with children. But they are not good dogs for rough children who are little hellions.

  2. My shih tzu was raised around kids, other dogs, and cats, and he's great with them.  He's very sweet to them.  Getting them socialized early is the most important thing, especially when there are going to be kids around.  But if it is a puppy you are adopting and it will be around kids from the get-go, I don't think there will be any problem at all.  You might also want to look into puppy training class to help in socialization with other dogs.  My little guy Cubby loves children.  Good luck.

  3. If you get a puppy and properly introduce them to the children and the children are over 5 then absolutely....get one...they are wonderful

  4. They can be a bit nippy, especially with small children who don't know how to play with it properly. If you want a small fluffy dog try a Maltese. They're supposed to be good with kids.
