  1. i don't think that they're legal.  i've seen some lights that were smoked like you're talking about, but most of the time it's best to have a third brake light as well.  when i was in japan, it was fine, but i had a light in my trunk lid as well.  you definitely don't want to get rear-ended, but how big of a difference would it make whether or not the brake lights are 2 or 3 shades lighter?  that's up to you, but you don't want to break the law, right?  you can have your car in a car show with smoked lights, but can't actually drive it on the road.

  2. they are illegal in ga but u can get away with them until hit you!

  3. In Michigan, the law requires a tail lamp to emit a red light plainly visible for at least 500 feet to the rear of the vehicle.

The law also requires stop lamps to emit a red or amber light and be capable of being seen and distinguished from other lamps for a distance of 100 feet, including during normal daylight.

If the cover you apply prohibits the lamp from meeting these requirements then it is unlawful.

I could not find Georgia's law on tail lights.

Contact the Georgia DMV and ask them.  They will have the exact answer.

  4. No. The national safety requirements set the standards for lights. This is federal not state and applies nation wide.

  5. There not legal anywhere. What you want to get rear ended by someone on their cell phone because they can't see your brake lights. There bright red for a reason. Covering them is just being stupid.

  6. The law reads the same for all states, headlamp and taillight covers are illegal, they reduce the intensity of the light.
