Are snoopy and red barron the same "people"?

Snoopy is pretending to FIGHT the Red Baron, NOT be him.  In some of the strips he refers to his doghouse as a British Sopwith Camel airplane and often gets shot down, hence the classic line "Curse you, Red Baron!"

While historians still debate who actually killed Richthofen, Canadian Arthur Brown is usually given credit, and he flew a Sopwith Camel.
